| Winter, a time to examine Tarporley's bottom. |
|
|
|
Over the winter months Tarporley has been out on the bank having her bottom painted and some new steel over-plated under the engine room and boatman's cabin. Her engine, also, has had a complete overhall. This work was made possible by the hard work of her fantastic band of volunteers. She is now back and ready for all the Summer workload has to offer.

Back into the water with a shiney bottom. The volunteers take a breath. (It is not true that the dog was used to do the blacking).

It was a beautiful autumn day and we had a splendid time along the canal with members of the London Borough of Waltham Forest for a return trip to Little Venice. At Camden Lock we met and kidnapped Emma Thompson with Greg Wise and daughter Gaia, the most wonderful couple you could ever meet, we were all totally enchanted by them.

The guys from St. Mungos (an association which helps men and women sleeping rough), were inspired after a trip on Tarporley to paint a mural in the grounds of their St. Pancras Way Hostel, pictured above with their helpers. It looks great and we are very proud to have been the inspiration for bringing out their artistic talents. More information of St. Mungos work for the homless visit their web site www.st-mungos.co.uk

TARPORLEYS HEROES
The insane volunteers who go to great lengths just for fun

While turning Tarporley between trips she picked up a large post office bag on her propellor which threw the rudder of its mounting. This could mean Tarporley having to be dry docked for the repair and so be out of service for a few weeks - but no - James Bill came to the rescue in his rubber suit and in no time we were back running.

Tarporley had just reached Victoria Park when BANG - no accelerator!!! On investigation the metal linkage rod on the accelerator had snapped. The passengers were having a pick-nick in the park, not aware of our problem. It was Saturday afternoon, most business were closed, but Ian Cooper set of determined to save the day. When the party arrived back Ian miraculously had the rod welded and re-fixed and Tarporley was ready to leave. The passengers totally unaware of the drama set off back to base.

Some e-mails received

Name: Ali Mahomed
Comments: Very much enjoyed my trip around your splendid website. Loved the pictures of rural tranquillity. Loved the story of the painstaking reconstruction of the Tarporley. Hated the Dive In section for making me seasick. |
Name: Marilyn
Comments: Enjoyed your pages very much and will try and come and see you when I'm in London.
I have a long association with the Wooden Canal Boat Society (Greater Manchester) and know how much work it takes to get something like this up and running, and then maintain it over the years. Well done! |
Name: Michael F Ritte
Comments: Dear Tarporley
The newly formed Diversity Directorate, formed in the wake of the Stephen Lawrence Murder enquiry is resident on the 9th floor at New Scotland Yard.
The support group that I am a member of have been given the authority to plan a team building day for the 12 or so people employed within that group.
I am personally of the opinion "What better a day 'team building' than learning about our heritage on the canals of our capital London". Could we embark on some form of Competition, or Quiz for it's members, split up into
teams.
If I could ask you for details on any type of activity that you feel 'Tarporley' could provide. |
Name: Jane Hunting
Comments: I found your organisation very interesting and your volunteers are doing a great job.
I am collating as many ghostly recollections from users of the cut that I can but so far the response to my adverts has been minimal. If and when I get my 'haunted canals' published I will let you know but in the meantime I am based in Nottingham and not in a position to help you out. |
Name: Polly Braden
Comments: I met you today on the canal, the photojournalist. I'd love to come and take some pictures whilst your out on a trip especially if you're taking a charitable group out.
Thanks |
Name : Esther Leslie
Comments: Just a quick line to say thank you so much for the truly wonderful day on Sunday. It has completely changed my relationship to the canal - and I look forward to seeing Tarporley going by as I walk down there - now that I have been aboard, and now that I know a little bit about steering.
Best wishes |

A SAD NOTE
WE ARE CONSTANTLY LOSING ORIGINAL HISTORIC STRUCTURES ALONG THE REGENTS CANAL. The latest is a building growing over part of the double lock structure at City Road, Islington.
PICTURED LEFT: You can see the original lock gate fittings being buried under a large slab of concrete.
FUTURE GENERATIONS WILL NEVER AGAIN BE ABLE TO SEE THIS AS A DOUBLE LOCK ! ! !
BELOW: How Thomas Shepherd saw City Road Locks in their working days we have accepted a few changes over the years. |
